Make your own sweet potato fries - in the oven

The sweet potato is becoming increasingly popular with us. Is it due to the Paleo movement, which is becoming more and more popular? Sweet potato fries can be found more and more often in restaurants. Not without reason, because they are simply super tasty!

Why sweet potatoes are healthy

Satiety

and effect on blood sugar levels

Sweet potatoes

contain almost twice as much fiber as conventional potatoes. As a result, they cause blood sugar levels to rise more slowly and keep us feeling full for longer. Sweet potatoes are therefore a very interesting side dish if you want to maintain your weight or even lose weight.

Ingredients with great benefits

Sweet potatoes

contain a lot of vitamin B6 and potassium. These two nutrients can be important to support your cardiovascular system. This is because vitamin B6 helps to lower homocysteine levels, which is considered a cardiovascular risk factor (and incidentally, B6 also helps to lower histamine). Potassium, on the other hand, is said to have a positive effect on blood pressure. And potassium is an important electrolyte for regulating the heart's natural rhythm.

Sweet potatoes also contain good amounts of beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A in the body. Beta-carotene is said to have anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, skin-protecting and eye-protecting effects, which should definitely not be missing from our diet.

And as if all that wasn't enough, sweet potatoes also contain good amounts of manganese (important for carbohydrate metabolism and energy production), vitamin C (antioxidant) and vitamin E.The combination of vitamin C, E and beta-carotene is said to have a particularly positive effect on beautiful skin and strong hair.

Sweet potatoes to combat sweet cravings after a meal

If you often crave sweets after a meal, I recommend incorporating more naturally sweet foods into your meals. Oven-baked root vegetables or sweet potatoes in particular help to satisfy your sweet tooth so that you don't reach for all the sweet stuff after a meal because you're already satisfied with what you've eaten.

Although the name might suggest it, sweet potatoes - unlike conventional potatoes - are not a member of the nightshade family. The sweet potato is a bindweed.

What's wrong with nightshades? Nightshades (e.g. potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers) can promote inflammation and should be avoided by people with arthritis and chronic illnesses. People with histamine intolerance are also advised to avoid nightshade vegetables.

Sweet potato fries - easy to make yourself

Selbstgemachte Süsskartoffel Pommes auf einem weissen TellerIngredients (for 1 Person):

3 medium-sized sweet potatoes

2

tablespoons of coconut oil

1

scant teaspoon of salt

1

teaspoon of smoked paprika powder

1

teaspoon of dried garlic powder

Preparation:

Preheat the oven to 220 degrees

Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them first into slices, then into sticks (fries shape). Heat the coconut oil very slightly if it is too solid (often not necessary in summer) and mix with the spices.

In a large bowl, mix the sweet potatoes cut into fries with the spice/oil mixture so that all the fries are coated all over.

Line a baking tray with baking paper and arrange the fries nicely side by side on it.

Bake for 40 minutes at 220 degrees, turning the fries halfway through.

It is advisable to check the oven from time to time the first time, as not every oven bakes the same way. In my case, the fries were dark after 40 minutes, but not burnt. They were relatively crispy, even though there was no starch in the marinade. But I don't think it's necessary to use starch either.

I'd love to hear from you if you've tried it and whether you liked the fries. Or do you have another favorite sweet potato recipe? I look forward to your comment!
