Make your own hummus - one of my favorite recipes for aperitifs or buffets

Hummus is not only a popular dish in the Middle East, but has also been a trend in Europe for some time. The chickpeas it contains are not only delicious, but also healthy. They contain a good amount of B vitamins(B1, B6, B9/folic acid) and a high proportion of the minerals magnesium, iron and zinc. You can also find a large selection of hummus in the supermarket, but with our recipe you can easily make your own hummus - deliciously fresh and wonderfully creamy. It's quick and easy to make. All you need for your homemade hummus is chickpeas, olive oil, tahini and spices.

Making your own hummus is easy - here's how

Hummus

from the supermarket is quick to buy, but not nearly as tasty and fluffy as the homemade version. The quantity and quality of the sesame butter (tahini) is very important for delicious hummus. Many recipes add a little tahini and a lot of olive oil to the hummus. You should not do this, as olive oil does not belong in the hummus, but on top of the hummus when serving.

You can find good tahini in Asian stores or Turkish greengrocers.

What ingredients do you need to make your own hummus?

You can conjure up your own creamy, delicious hummus with just a few ingredients. You only need the following ingredients:

1 tin of chickpeas in brine (approx. 260g drained weight)
3 tbsp lemon juice (preferably freshly squeezed)
3 tbsp thin sesame paste (tahini) made from 100% sesame seeds
½ tsp salt
1 tsp cumin for the typical oriental flavor
approx. 1 dl ice-cold water (makes the hummus fluffy)
Optional: garlic, finely pureed with lemon juice

2

tbsp extra virgin olive oil (for garnish)

Preparation - make sure you get the order right

Hummus mit Olivenöl in einer Schüssel und Gemüsesticks und Knäckebrot angerichtetAs mentioned above, it is particularly important to have the right amount and the best possible quality of sesame paste (tahini) for the homemade hummus. Now it's just important that you follow the correct order of preparation:

Put the lemon juice, garlic and salt in the blender.

Add the sesame paste (tahini), blend well and whisk with the ice-cold water until creamy.

Now add the chickpeas to the blender and blend until creamy.

Add the olive oil to garnish the finished hummus. The perfect, fresh hummus is ready. With raw vegetable sticks for dipping (carrots, peppers, cucumber, celery sticks) you have conjured up a healthy and delicious lunch or dinner. Homemade hummus is also perfect for sharing when you have guests.

How long does homemade hummus keep?

You can store your homemade hummus in an airtight container (Tupperware or jar) in the fridge for up to a week. It is always best to take the hummus out of the fridge 30 minutes before serving so that it is no longer so cold and can develop its flavor.

Hummus goes very well with falafel and flatbread, grilled vegetables, nachos and wraps. You can also use hummus as a salad dressing or paste.
