Important nutrients for your gut and where you get them from

The gut - the root of our health

Our gut and its health is one of the most important topics when it comes to our health in general.

If you have ever suffered from digestive problemssuch as diarrhea, then you know how much they can affect your mood.

However, intestinal problems do not always manifest themselves in problems with bowel movements, but can also cause completely different conditions, such as chronic fatigue, mood swings, susceptibility to infections, autoimmune diseases or chronic illnesses such as inflammation.

That is why we would like to introduce you today to three important substances that will help you to get (or keep) your gut back in order.

The amino acid L-glutamine

You may be familiar with L-glutamine from the gym, as it is the most important amino acid for muscle building and is often offered there as a shake or powder.

However, our gut also benefits enormously from L-glutamine, as it helps to build up intestinal cells and repair the intestinal mucosa. It is therefore an important substance for repairing leaky gut and helps with inflammatory bowel diseases or allergic reactions such as hay fever or inflammatory processes such as gluten intolerance.

Glutamine is also helpful for irritable bowel syndrome and diarrhoea by balancing mucus production.

Sources of L-glutamine are bone broths, pasture-raised meat, spirulina, Chinese cabbage, spinach, parsley and also lentils or beans. In our recipe ideas you will find two recipes that contain foods from this list: Our homemade bouillonwithout artificial additives and the Asian sauerkraut kimchi, which is made with Chinese cabbage.

The protein collagen

Collagen is a protein and is the most abundant protein in the human body. It is needed to build connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, bones and cartilage.

Collagen helps to break down proteins and soothe your gut lining by repairing damaged cell walls and replenishing them with healing amino acids.

The biggest benefit of collagen, as far as the gut is concerned, is its ability to connective tissue. and thus helps to "seal" the protective mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract. Collagen therefore helps very well if you suffer from the permeable bowel mentioned earlier, but collagen can also be useful for irritable bowel syndrome, reflux and inflammatory bowel diseases.

Collagen is the most important ingredient for gelatine and is mainly found in good old bone broth. This is easy to recognize if you have already made such a broth yourself. When it gets cold, it has a gelatinous substance.

But it's not just beef broth that contains collagen, chicken bone broth and even fish broth do too.

Lactic acid bacteria

Probably the best known lactic acid bacteria are lactobacilli and bifidobacteria.

Among other things, they are responsible for the environment in the intestine and thus inhibit or kill off pathogenic bacteria. It is important to know that the pH value in the intestine should be acidic. This is precisely what the lactic acid bacteria ensure.

An interesting fact is that most people who have a stool analysis carried out have a pH value in their intestines that is too alkaline! In other words, too few acid-producing bacteria.

Fermentierte Lebensmittel im GlasLactic acid bacteria are important for communication between the gut and the brain(also known as the gut-brain axis ), they strengthen the immune system and improve the barrier effect of the intestinal mucosa.

They make an important contribution to the preservation and development of healthy intestinal flora.

In the past, these bacteria were used for preservation. For example, sailors usually took sauerkraut with them on their voyages as a source of vitamin C.

This brings us to the sources of lactic acid bacteria. These are not only (but also) found in dairy products such as yoghurt or kefir, but also in fermented products such as sauerkraut or fermented drinks such as kombucha.

The important thing with such fermented products is that they have not been heated or pasteurized and, of course, do not contain too much sugar! And that's where things get difficult again with many conventional products. So our tip: make it yourself.

What if I don't have time to make these products myself?
