In the broadest sense, the guest articles on this blog are always about sticking with it. Changing your diet in the short term and losing a few kilos with willpower and discipline is not a problem for most of us. But discipline usually disappears after two to three weeks. And then?
That's when good strategies, real motivation, changing habits, the right attitude and finding strong allies are needed! One such ally is your own living space. Find out today from interior design expert Maria Husch how you can design them to support you in your healthy eating plan.
Healthy room design: everyday tips
Do you know the situation: party, good atmosphere, good food and somehow everyone ends up in the kitchen. The room that is perhaps not so big, so perfectly furnished and so well organized. If we go back in our human history, everyone ends up meeting around the campfire.
So space must have something to do with behavior and therefore also with eating behavior. Our spaces influence our actions and thoughts 24 hours a day. Our conscious mind takes in just a few things every second, but our subconscious mind works at full speed and can absorb millions of pieces of information in that time.
Much of this information relates to our rooms.
Imagine your rooms keep telling you: Yes, I'm eating healthily! Yes, I do exercise! Yes, I value quality food! Imagine that fast food, snacking and convenience products have been eliminated. Your subconscious will want to go there and your behavior will change.
I'll give you my most important tips here on how you can change your eating habits more easily, achieve your goals and really promote your health by consciously designing your space.
You may have heard about the dos and don'ts in kitchen design, about strange rules that are guaranteed to bring "health".
The stove must not be next to the fridge, the hob must face into the room and the cable from the rice stove must face east (no kidding - it exists). These are extreme things from Feng Shui or actually a somewhat unusual interpretation of it. Why is this the case?
In the past, cooking was essential for survival. Medicine was cooked on the hearth for hours on end to ensure survival. It's clear that a positive and good attitude is crucial.
This is probably less important when unpacking a ready-made pizza and not necessarily essential for survival, even for a quick and healthy meal. That's why I'm giving you simple, inexpensive tips that will really help you.
What's in focus in your rooms?
Take the (unhealthy) food out of focus and put the really important things right there. Do a check on yourself. What is visible in all the rooms at first glance? The main question is of course: "Is the kitchen very much in the center and therefore food a main focus?"
When you come into your home, everything is immediately focused on your kitchen, it can sometimes be too much. Especially if you want to drop a kilo or two. See if you can somehow find other ways and other perspectives. This happens quite unconsciously. You come home and your first thought is about food. Sure, not so easy in this day and age with our wonderful eat-in kitchens.
You're sitting on the sofa watching TV and somewhere in the corner of your eye you can always see the food. And you'll be quicker to reach for the chips. Room dividers, curtain panels, a different position for your seating furniture and different paths can help to create a new situation.
Healthy room design in detail
And then it's down to the details. This is where you should create incentives for the foods you want to (or should) eat. Look at all the pictures in blogs, on Pinterest and in magazines. There are some that really show naturalness, health, vitality and fresh produce. And there's chocolate and other kitschy sweets in bright colors.
Which ones inspire you to spontaneously eat a bar of chocolate? And which ones inspire you to prepare healthy food?
You too can bring all things healthy into the room with pictures, newspapers and healthy decorations in the kitchen. The smoothie maker instead of the deep fryer on the worktop. The fruit basket instead of the chocolate as a dining table decoration.
The sportswear in the wardrobe instead of the sweets brochures on the dresser.
Letting go - decluttering for health
Healthy eating always has to do with letting go. Old habits, patterns and maybe even a kilogram or two can go. Something has to go to make room for something new.
Not easy, because life is so good with all that "weight". And the new things - no idea what will come. Start in the rooms and do a clear-out. Let things go, create space and tidy up.
Of course, it makes sense to start in the kitchen and throw out all the junk.
But it's also about the closet, cellar and bookshelf. If you have free space, then there's room for new things - for healthy eating that's fun.
Dine like a queen and a king!
And when you enjoy your wonderful, healthy dishes and vital snacks, do so in the right ambience. Value and invest in your dining area and use it - I'm not talking about the sofa! The table is an essential piece of furniture and has a major impact on health and communication with your fellow human beings.
Get out the festive tableware, the beautiful table linen and the fine glasses just for you, your enjoyment and your health. It's best to leave them nearby. You are worth dining like a queen, a king.
Sociable and healthy interior design,
And now we come back to the party, to the kitchen and why it is so essential. Eating is one of our survival instincts. It's hard to imagine today, but thousands of years ago it was, and our subconscious mind has saved: Well-deserved enjoyment of the painstakingly collected and hunted food.
What's more, communication always took place around the fireplace - of course, because this is where it was warm and cozy. And your party is also about enjoyment, communication and coziness.
So pay special attention to your kitchen, your dining area, if you want to boost your health and well-being - not just at the party, but 365 days a year. You deserve to be healthy and happy. Have fun putting it into practice.
