Digestive problems in babies

The digestive system of babies after birth and in the first year of life is not yet fully developed. Digestive problems therefore often occur in the first few months, but this is no cause for concern.

Causes of digestive problems in babies

The most common digestive problems in babies include diarrhea, constipation, flatulence and three-month colic. There are many causes for these complaints, the most common of which include

  • Stress
  • The intestinal flora is not yet fully developed
  • Change in diet
  • medication
  • Intolerances

To find out what is causing your baby's digestive problems, you should observe them closely over several days. Frequent, soft stools indicate diarrhea. Infrequent and hard stools are signs of constipation. Frequent crying and a hard tummy, on the other hand, can indicate flatulence.

If the symptoms persist over a longer period of time or if symptoms such as fever or vomiting occur, you should see your paediatrician to be on the safe side.

Nutrition tips to counteract digestive problems

Depending on your baby's age, an adequate intake of fibre and fluids must be ensured.

In the first few months, this is breast milk and, from around the sixth month, complementary foods.

Please make sure to avoid stuffing foods such as bananas or raw apples.

Exercise is also very important for your baby's well-being. Tummy aches can also be soothed with a warm bath or baby massages.
