My article about chia seeds is and remains one of the most popular on the blog. Time and again, readers ask a wide variety of questions about this so-called "superfood". That's why I'm very happy about today's guest article by Mai and Janik from Chiabolika, who tell us here how they discovered chia seeds for themselves and then present a great recipe.

Chia seeds as a popular superfood
The Aztecs have been using chia as an energy source for their fighters and messengers for thousands of years, and we have now also discovered this superfood for ourselves. We are Mai and Janik, two enthusiastic athletes who attach great importance to a healthy and conscious diet. The book "Born to Run", which tells the incredible story of the Tarahumara, gave us a taste for chia.
The Tarahumara are a small mountain tribe that lives in the Mexican Copper Canyons. They are known for being able to cover several hundred kilometers at a time on their legendary ultra runs. They rely entirely on the natural energy source chia.
Chia as a source of energy for athletes
We were so impressed by these runners and their diet that we continued to research this miracle seed. We were able to find out: Chia is one of the most nutrient-rich foods in the world!
Chia seeds seemed to be just the right food for our sporting activities and so we ordered chia seeds for the first time 2 years ago. For our first Chia experience, we prepared Chia Fresca, just like the Tarahumara traditionally do: In chia fresca, chia seeds are swollen in water and refined with lime juice and a little raw sugar. Due to its gel-like consistency, we admittedly found chia unusual at first, but after a few chia drinks we quickly acquired a taste for it and no longer want to do without it.
Since then, chia has been on our daily menu and contributes to our balanced diet. The fact that the carbohydrates in chia seeds are broken down very slowly by the digestive tract is particularly useful for our everyday sporting activities. This means they can be used as a long-lasting source of energy. This gives us noticeably more power on the running track or on the sports field. After all, it is not without reason that chia means nothing other than "strength" in the language of the Aztecs.
Chia can be easily integrated into numerous dishes. As chia muesli or as a topping for salads, yoghurt and smoothies.
For a quick start with chia, we give you a delicious recipe that we recently tested. The chia blueberry oatmeal yoghurt is really quick and easy to prepare.
