Did you know that wood has an antibacterial effect?
We are currently in Mora in Sweden with our campervan. It is the place where the finish line of the famous Wasalauf cross-country race is located.
Mora is also in the region where the famous Dala horses are carved out of wood. Of course, I couldn't resist and bought one for myself.
You come across wood and carving quite often here. The houses are made of wood, famous knives are also made here in Mora, including for carving, and you often see wooden plates and bowls.
That fits in perfectly with the theme of today's episode!
Before we left, I spoke to a wood turner at the Christmas market in our little town of Einsiedeln, who was selling wooden plates, among other things. And I thought to myself, wooden plates are super practical in the van as they don't break so easily if they are shaken around a bit.
But is that hygienic, I asked myself? And then I asked the wood turner!
In this episode, you'll find out:
- Why wood virtually cleans itself (antibacterial tannic acid, possibly lactic acid bacteria, wood absorbs water and deprives bacteria of their basis of life)
- What the woodturner experienced as a child on the alp regarding wooden dishes
- Why wooden chopping boards are much better than plastic and what you can look out for when cleaning (no washing-up liquid, wet from both sides, do not leave in water, rub regularly with oil or grease)
