Julia Gruber's five-point plan for a successful gut cleanse
Gut health is a complex topic. The mistake that many people and even doctors and therapists still make today is to underestimate this complexity. Do you have intestinal problems? Then take a good probiotic, do a gut cleanse and everything will be fine. We would like it to be that simple. But it's not that simple! In this episode, I talk about the components needed for a successful gut cleanse. If you're a doctor or therapist, I'll also introduce you to our specialist course on the microbiome and metabolome, which we're offering for the third time next year. And if you are simply interested in your own gut health, you will learn in this episode which steps you can consider on your path to health.Case study
I recently heard another story of suffering from a young woman who told me how badly she was doing at university, she was constantly tired, had a lot of intolerances and had a bloated belly as if she was seven months pregnant. Nobody could figure out what the problem was until a doctor finally did a stool analysis and found out that she was suffering from leaky gut syndrome. He then gave her probiotics and prebiotics and told her which foods she should avoid, and she got better very quickly. Until she had another relapse, even though she strictly adhered to all the recommendations. And that's a typical story! It is usually easy to achieve quick success if someone has previously eaten an unhealthy diet and then switches to a conscious, gut-friendly diet. But that has nothing to do with long-term healing!Yes, diet is important. And probiotics help. But neither alone will do the trick, especially in chronic cases.
Causes
In this case, the cause of the leaky gut was not investigated and remedied. The young woman omitted important nutrients from her diet for several years and over time tolerated them less and less. And the so-called healthy diet that was recommended to her (e.g. gluten-free) was not really healthy because she then simply ate gluten-free convenience foods. And if the basis is not right, then even good probiotics are of relatively little use because there is no good environment in the gut where good bacteria can thrive.Dr. Simon Feldhaus, MD, who worked with us to set up the specialist consultant for microbiome and metabolome training, says:"It may be necessary to treat the gut in order for other therapies to work. But sometimes other therapies have to be done first for a gut therapy to work at all. If certain disruptive factors are not removed, the administration of any probiotics will not be successful."
Networking
This is why our training is structured in such a way that we deal with the networking of different areas and all the steps involved, which are necessary for successful bowel cleansing. The following steps are necessary. A comprehensive assessment of the current situation, a diagnosis that is neither too extensive nor too short-sighted, how to classify the results and, above all, how to prioritize the next steps. We then discuss various measures such as a gut-friendly diet, supportive nutritional supplements, the importance of lifestyle and stress reduction.
If you've been struggling with your health for a while, I highly recommend seeking help from someone who is familiar with a holistic or integrative approach to gut health. Or find a team of therapists who work together. If you are in Switzerland, we can also recommend graduates of our specialist course!
The complexity of a gut cleanse
To come back to the title of today's episode, it is important not to make the biggest mistake in colon cleansing, namely underestimating the complexity of the topic. And by complexity I don't necessarily mean complexity, but that the topic needs to be approached from different angles.Components of a gut cleanse
Your mindset or inner attitude (or call it motivation). You have to want it and also be prepared to give up and rethink any habits that you have grown to love but are not beneficial. It is also important that you are prepared to do it "properly" and not half-heartedly. This also includes carrying out a stool analysis or other analysis.Gut-friendly diet. The measures may differ depending on the results of the analysis. Someone who has a histamine problem will receive different recommendations than someone who has a leaky gut problem or an irritable bowel syndrome. But what is important, and what we also teach in the specialist course, is that being too restrictive for too long and cutting out lots of foods is not sensible. The aim must always be to be able to eat a varied diet again in the long term.
Support through food supplements. Trying to do everything with diet alone can work, but if you have a large deficit of beneficial bacteria or a permeable intestinal mucosa, why should you do without helpful substances and drag the whole thing out unnecessarily? I always compare it to a broken leg, where you would also use a cast and crutches. Wouldn't you?
Lifestyle -one of the biggest and most important factors is stress. Chronic health problems are almost always related to stress! And without reducing stress, which you may not even be aware of, you will not achieve long-term health. That's why we spend a whole day talking about the gut-brain axis and the links between stress and gut health. In addition to stress, a healthy lifestyle also includes daily exercise, spending time in nature, getting enough sleep and much more.
Keep at it. It's not about living healthily for a few months until you feel well again, but about permanently changing habits and making them the new normal. When I was still doing coaching sessions, I was often asked: when can I eat normally again? What we are currently doing as a society eating is not normal! We think it's normal, but it's not appropriate for the human race. Dyes, additives, preservatives, fast food, baked goods, potato chips from plastic bags - that's not normal. We are only told through advertising that this is normal. Once you realize how much better you feel when you eat real food, when you feel the difference in your own body, then you will realize that this was not normal before.
No quick fix
A gut cleanse doesn't just mean taking a few powders and capsules and carrying on as before. Healing is not a quick fix. But you only have this one body and if you take care of it, you will have a qualitatively better life, I can guarantee you that.Continuing education

Conclusion
After the first course, I asked Dr. Simon Feldhaus for his conclusion:"I thought it was a very intelligently put together, very successful course, with very, very interesting course participants, who also accompanied the whole thing interactively, interspersing it with good questions. You could tell that understanding had increased. And I believe that the goal we had was to create a real expert system to demonstrate the integrative and interconnected nature of the gut, the microbiome and the human being as a whole, and that we succeeded quite well, because this idea of the course doesn't actually exist yet. There are individual seminars on the microbiome, on bacteria, but that's not the point. The aim is to build up a networked system, where the gut and the microbiome are a central topic, but by no means the only one. In my opinion, this course has been very successful. The feedback is all very positive and I can say from the lecturer's side that it was very successful from my point of view."
If you would like to take part, I would be delighted if you could register. The number of participants is limited to 20.
