Short-chain fatty acids: The underestimated heroes for gut health and well-being (DG265)

Resistant starch and prebiotics: Food for the intestinal bacteriaandfor the productionshort-chainr fatty acids

When it comes to gut health, the focus is often on probiotics, the good bacteria in the gut that ensure a healthy intestinal environment. But what is often forgotten, and I also had to read up a bit in preparation for this episode, is the importance of short-chain fatty acids.

Highlights of this episode

  • Why are short-chain fatty acids important for the gut?
  • What can you do to help your gut bacteria produce short-chain fatty acids?
  • What is resistant starch
  • What are prebiotics?
  • Why are probiotics also important?
  • What foods should you eat if you want to promote the formation of short-chain fatty acids?
  • Which bacteria promote the formation of short-chain fatty acids?

What are short-chain fatty acids anyway?

Short-chain fatty acids, or SCFAs for short, are fatty acids with fewer than six carbon atoms. The three most important short-chain fatty acids in the human intestine are
  • Acetate
  • propionate
  • butyrate

These fatty acids are produced by the fermentation of indigestible fiber by your intestinal bacteria. This makes them so-called metabolites of the gut microbiome and they have important functions in the human body.

Short-chain fatty acids play a key role in maintaining gut health.

Why are short-chain fatty acids important for the gut?

By eating a varied, high-fibre diet and consuming prebiotic and probiotic foods, you can specifically promote the growth and activity of these beneficial bacteria, which ultimately leads to a higher production of short-chain fatty acids in the gut. From my experience as a nutrition coach, however, I know that many people find this high-fiber diet with lots of vegetables and resistant starch difficult. I'm not even talking about probiotic foods; fermented vegetables in particular are eaten far too little.

What What can you do to help your intestinal bacteria to produce short-chain fatty acids?

If you also find it difficult, I would advise you to take a course of Fucosyllactose, Grow and our Arktibiotic Premium. This will enable your gut to produce short-chain fatty acids in the first place. Go to our store and search for Feed, Grow and Premium, you will easily find the products.

If you would rather first make sure that you actually have too few butyrate formers in your gut, you can also have the bacteria mentioned above tested in a microbiome analysis. The information is always included in the analyses we carry out.

Write to us at post@arktisbiopharma.ch and our team will be happy to help you take the necessary steps. In 14 days you will have clarity about the state of the bacterial landscape in your gut.
