Medicine that creates health instead of fighting disease - A conversation with Dr. Claas Hohmann (DG314)

Why prevention changes more than any medication

In this episode, I talk to Dr. Claas Hohmann about a topic that affects us all: metabolic health. It's not about getting as old as possible, but about living out your years in good health, without pain, frailty or permanent fatigue.

Highlights of the episode

  • Why "metabolically unhealthy" is the mother and father of almost all diseases of civilization
  • The real reason why so many people become frail in old age and how you can prevent it
  • Why insulin resistance has long since become the norm and how you can tell if you are affected
  • Why muscle training in old age is not only possible, but life-prolonging
  • How preventive medicine not only delays diseases, but in some cases prevents them

Health span instead of just years of life

Dr. Klaas Hohmann makes it clear: it is not the number of years that counts, but how long we are healthy. Many people spend their last 15-20 years with chronic illnesses. The aim is therefore to shorten the span of illness - and extend the span of health.

Musculature: underestimated and crucial

Frailty is a major reason for the need for care. This is often due to insufficient muscle strength and mass. Muscles are not only the "musculoskeletal system", they are the largest sugar store and a central metabolic organ. The good news is that it's never too late - you can build up muscle and even bone mass even in old age.

How can I recognize my metabolic status?

Sober blood sugar alone is not enough. Dr. Hohmann recommends three components

:
  • HOMA index: measure blood glucose and insulin to visualize insulin needs.

  • Continuous glucose monitoring (10-14 days): learn how your own meals affect your blood sugar.

  • HbA1c: shows the average of the last three months - but not peaks.
In the event of abnormalities, an oral glucose tolerance test (with insulin measurement) provides clear indications of insulin sensitivity or insulin resistance, an often overlooked precursor of diabetes.

Prevention you can touch: Buff Medical Resort

At the Buff Medical Resort in Constance, individual risks are identified at an early stage. From genetic factors to cardiovascular issues (including cardiac MRI). This is followed by customized lifestyle interventions: Training, nutrition, sleep, stress and breathing regulation. The stay serves as an initial kick-off; telefollow-up care is optional. Short visits without a package are also possible to get to know the program.

Rethinking food: from the plate to the cell

Metabolic health starts with how we eat. FX-Mayr Medicine emphasizes thorough chewing and salivation - the first stage of digestion. If you only chew 7-8 times, you start "in second gear". Guideline: around 40 times per bite. Simply structured, well-tolerated meals also help; fasting can be useful, but doesn't have to be.

Conclusion

Metabolic health is the "mother and father" of many diseases of civilization. Those who measure early, exercise specifically, eat wisely and address stress/sleep postpone illness - and gain quality of life in the present.
