Learn to love what it takes to get what you want (DG261)

How to improve your gut health with this mindset shift

Leyla Hormozi and Amy Porterfield have talked about this mindset shift. Although in a business context, I think it can be applied to your personal life as well as your health. Especially if you find it hard to eat healthy and do the things that would be important for your gut health.
Today I'm talking about a mindset shift, which highly successful online business owner Amy Porterfield herself says was the number one factor in her huge success.
A mindset shift is a kind of change of consciousness. A new way of thinking. Because you can change your thoughts at any time if you want to.

Mindset shift - the concept

This new way of thinking is called: learn to love what it takes to get what you want.
A very simple concept. Simple to understand, but not necessarily easy to implement, I admit.
To make it a little more concrete: if you want to lose weight, for example, or eliminate bloating or you can't tolerate foods that you would actually like to eat: Then you know it's important to eat healthy.
But for many people, and perhaps for you too, changing your diet is something you'd rather not do! Because it means going without. It feels like a buzzkill. And somehow doesn't seem to fit into your everyday life.
For example, we recently announced that we will be offering an alkaline fasting course in October 2024. And from a rational point of view, it sounds extremely logical to many people why alkaline fasting is good! It helps to calm digestion, get rid of toxins, get more energy, sleep better and maybe even lose a bit of weight. But alkaline fasting also means giving up alcohol and sweets, eating only vegetables and fruit, not drinking coffee and restricting yourself from many things for a week. That's tough. And so many people say to themselves: it's not for me. Because they would rather enjoy life in the short term than feel better in the long term.
That's how the brain works. It prefers short-term pleasure to long-term gain.
And this is where the mindset shift that I'm talking about today comes into play.

Why and how a mindset shift takes you further

You might be thinking: should I force myself to do something that I simply don't enjoy? I mean, yes! It often actually makes sense!
An example from my own life. I'm not incredibly sporty. But I know that sport and exercise are extremely important for your health. Especially now that I'm over 50, the importance of maintaining my muscles and mobility is as clear as day to me.
I used to make repeated attempts to exercise regularly. I did it for a while and then stopped again. Because I didn't enjoy it. Because I felt uncomfortable in the fitness center.
But I've since realized that the moments when something seems hard and I do it anyway are exactly the moments when I get stronger, when I grow. In terms of imagery, this fits particularly well with strength training, because a muscle only grows when it is challenged. When it is stressed in such a way that it says to itself: I have to get stronger so that I can withstand this stress better next time. Training has to be strenuous to a certain extent in order to have a training effect.
And yes, I don't necessarily love lifting a weight until I can't do it anymore. I don't love taking 1.5 hours several times a week to go to the gym and work out. I don't love sweating with exertion and getting a red head. I don't love learning new movements and not being able to do them. I don't love torturing myself.
But I love the results I get from training! I love it when I can walk steep paths much better on hikes without getting out of breath. I love it when I can carry things around the house with my husband, like furniture, or push trailers around and have the confidence that I can lift something like that with ease. I love it when I can sprint to catch the streetcar or train. I love it when my trainer says that my neck structure has improved dramatically or that my posture has improved.
By realizing for myself that I love the result I want so much, I've also learned to love the measures it takes to get those results!
And that's also what you can do if you want to eat healthily. For the sake of your gut and your health!

The inner attitude

Learn to love the measures that are necessary for this. Learn to love eating lots of vegetables, drinking water and cooking for yourself. These are all things that may not come easily to you and that you simply can't love at first. That's OK. Don't love them and do them anyway because you will love the result in the end. You'll find that the longer you stick with it, the more you'll realize that you'll find ways to make it at least bearable. You will find ways to prepare the vegetables that you like. How you can save time when cooking. How you can perhaps also infect family members or friends with your healthy measures and suddenly make it fun for you because you feel better.
A healthy lifestyle stands and falls with your inner attitude. I hope today's short episode has encouraged you to get started on creating a healthy body that allows you to pursue the activities that bring you joy and fulfillment.
