ADHD, burnout, depression: functional medicine instead of stamps
In this episode, I talk to Dr. Robert Barring, an expert in functional medicine, about the often overlooked physical causes of mental symptoms. We delve into the world of genetics, mitochondria and neurotransmitters - and what this has to do with burnout, ADHD and depression. Why many people get a label too early, what functional medicine does differently - and how real root cause research can give hope.
Highlights
- Why psychological symptoms often have a physical cause
- How genetics and neurotransmitters affect our mental health
- The role of environmental toxins, diet and gut flora
- Why functional medicine can do more than conventional medicine
- Why Ritalin is not always the solution - and what alternatives are available
- Inspiring case histories of children and adults
Psyche or biochemistry?
Many people are prematurely psychiatrized. However, the causes can often be traced back to genetic factors, the energy balance of the cells or neurotransmitter imbalances. With the help of modern laboratories, Dr. Barring can show how strongly the adrenal glands and mitochondria influence the mental state.
Racehorses on the hamster wheel
Children with ADHD or hypersensitive traits in particular suffer from labels such as "inattentive" or "conspicuous". Some simply use more energy due to genetic characteristics, perceive more stimuli and are burnt out in the evening. Ritalin may help in the short term, but it does not eliminate the cause.
Environmental toxins and diet
A healthy intestinal flora plays a central role in mental health. Environmental toxins, poor nutrition and even radio radiation can weaken the blood-brain barrier and thus promote inflammation in the brain. Dr. Barring calls for: Stop the premature labeling - look at the causes!
Encouraging case histories
One boy was sent to a special school, but with an adapted diet and functional treatment, he managed to make two leaps in his class and became the city chess champion. Another boy was diagnosed with a low IQ despite being highly sensitive - here too, an individualized approach instead of stamps helped.
More than just talking: acting holistically
In addition to biochemical tests, Dr. Barring relies on embodiment-oriented methods. "Just talking is not enough," he says. Instead, his network combines laboratory diagnostics, coaching, nutrition and environmental medicine - often in teams with other experts.
Conclusion
Psychotropic drugs may be necessary, but there are often better alternatives. Functional medicine looks for the root cause, not just the symptoms. If you want to change, you have to work together - diet, lifestyle and micronutrients are part of the journey. And: initial improvements can be sometimes be noticeable after just a few days.
