Intestinal cleansing made easy - What to do if intestinal cleansing doesn't work? (DG233)

Bowel cleansing basics mini-series part 4

In this episode of the Darmglück podcast, Julia Gruber talks about potential problems and mistakes that can occur during a gut cleanse and how to fix them.
She emphasizes the importance of honest self-reflection regarding dietary habits and explains common mistakes such as the consumption of artificial sweeteners, gluten-free foods and excessive fruit consumption.
She also gives valuable tips on stress management and emphasizes the importance of a healthy gut-brain axis. Julia also explains the benefits of a microbiome analysis and how it can help to assess gut health.

Common or typical dietary mistakes that jeopardize the success of gut rehabilitation

If you are not happy with the results of your gut cleanse, then I recommend that you first take an honest look at your diet. Have you possibly made one or more of the following mistakes?

Milk in your coffee

Even the smallest amounts of cow's milk products can trigger flatulence or exacerbate the problems of a permeable intestinal mucosa. That's why I recommend completely avoiding cow's milk products when cleansing your gut. Even a sip of milk in your coffee.

Light drinks / artificial sweeteners

Did you perhaps think that because you can't have sugar, you'll just have something that is artificially sweetened, light drinks or chewing gum that contains sweeteners?
The problem is that these sweeteners can also cause bloating and, on top of that, make you crave sweets more and then eat sweets anyway.
Please leave sweeteners out completely. If you find it difficult to give up the sweet taste in coffee or tea, for example, I recommend ourgalactose.

Gluten-free foods

The next thing that is often done "wrong" is to consume gluten-free foods. Because I said, leave out the gluten. I'm thinking of gluten-free pasta, crispbread, gluten-free muesli or similar things. However, these are often highly processed foods. And I also said to leave out the highly processed foods. What's more, these are often foods that have a very high impact on sugar levels.

Only reduce carbohydrates, but don't eat enough fat and protein

What I also see more often is that people reduce carbohydrates but also eat very low-fat foods. And that in turn can lead to you not feeling really full.
So fat is definitely important. Olive oil and coconut oil are the two that I recommend above all others. You can also refer to our Danuwacoconut oil, although it is from our animal line, it is of high quality, cold-pressed and absolutely fine for human consumption.
Also include things like avocado, nuts, normal-fat meat or fatty fish in your diet. So don't skimp on fat and don't eat as little fat as possible, but good fats definitely belong in your diet and help you to feel satiated and satisfied.
Fat is also a flavor carrier, which is why it is important. As I said in the last episode, it's important that food tastes good and is enjoyable. And that's why you need an appropriate portion of fat so that you feel full and satisfied.
It is just as important that you eat enough protein. Protein also supports satiety and helps you avoid the temptation to eat too many carbohydrates.

Eating too much fruit

Unfortunately, many people eat too much fruit, which can always lead to problems. Fruit is healthy in and of itself, of course, but it also contains a lot of sugar. And people who may have a sensitive sugar level or even tend towards insulin resistance can react very strongly to fruit consumption with hunger. And fruit can also lead to bloating.
Many people have a slight or even more pronounced fructose intolerance. So eating too much fruit can actually cause problems. I recommend minimizing fruit to one or two portions a day. If you suffer from bloating or problems even though you are doing a bowel cleanse without experiencing any improvement, consider cutting out fruit completely. Not forever, but just leave it out for 7 or even 14 days and then see how you feel.

Problems that can occur during bowel cleansing and what you can do about them

Constant hunger

At the beginning you may have the feeling: "If I only eat three times a day, then of course I'll get hungry". And yes, you will get hungry. So make sure that it doesn't just come from your head.
As already mentioned, hunger can also come from eating too many fast carbohydrates and too little fat and protein. So make sure your meals are well balanced and eat as few fast carbohydrates or fruit as possible.
Another possibility is that you have a lot of acid in your body due to detoxification. Here I recommend ouralkaline powder to try it out. In the evening, before going to bed or at the moment when you get hungry even though you have eaten enough.

Headaches

If you get a headache or are very hungry at the beginning of the dietary change, this may actually be related to acidity. In this case, you can either take thealkaline powder or you can also take a style="font-weight: 400;">nAlkaline bath.

Digestive problems

If you experience digestive problems during the intestinal cleanse, take a look at the following points:
  • Are you drinking enough water? I recommend 35 ml per kilogram of body weight, pure, non-carbonated water (and not as tea, but as pure water). Depending on your preferences or in case of constipation, I also recommend drinking hot/warm water
  • Do you eat too much raw food? Either leave out raw food completely for 2 weeks and only eat cooked vegetables. Or at least skip raw food in the evening, especially if you have flatulence
  • Are you eating too quickly or not chewing properly? The important thing is to eat slowly and chew well
  • Tip: for diarrheaMoro carrot soup is a great remedy
  • If you are more likely to be constipated, check whether you are getting enough exercise. 7,000 to 10,000 steps/day is my recommendation

Further points to check

Food supplements

Are you using good quality products? Check your dietary supplements to see whether they contain any colorants or additives, or artificial flavors, sweeteners, etc.
It may also be that the supplements you are taking are of good quality but are not suitable for you.
For example, ourArktibiotic Premium is not recommended for histamine intolerance because it tends to increase histamine levels. In this case, we recommend theArktibiotic Sensitive. However, you may also be taking a probiotic that is not from us and in the event of problems I would ask what exactly is in it and whether it increases histamine, for example.
Prebiotics can also cause problems as they can trigger flatulence. OurGrow acacia fibers have really proved their worth here and do not cause bloating.

Stress is crucial

If you have the feeling that you're doing everything you should be doing to cleanse your gut but it's still not working properly and you're still experiencing discomfort, then you should definitely look at the issue of stress. Many people have stress that they don't perceive as such.
Stress can promote inflammation, which They make the intestinal mucosa permeable, weaken the immune system and also lead to diarrhea and constipation and much more.
When I say stress, almost everyone first thinks of work and overwork. Of course, it's quite possible that you work a lot. But it's also possible that you say, no, I'm not stressed, I don't work that much and that the stress is somewhere else.
Excessive demands in any area of your life, for example, can be a stress factor. Relationships can also be a stress factor. If you have someone in your life who is constantly annoying you, that's stress.
If you live in a place where you don't like it. For example, you have arguments with the neighbors or it's very loud or you simply have problems with the apartment, with things that are constantly breaking. That is also stress.
It can be stress if you are faced with some kind of life decision and don't know what to do. Watching a lot of news and worrying a lot is also a stress factor.
You can't always just get rid of it or avoid it. It could be that the person who is stressing you out is one of your children, your mother-in-law or your husband/wife.
So it's how you deal with stress and how you think about situations and people that can often bring a lot of relief.

Help with persistent problems

If the intestinal cleansing is not working properly, one option would be amicrobiome analysis or have it done.
About themicrobiome analysis is a very good way of finding out exactly where the problem lies. Of course, you need someone who can interpret the analysis results. And someone who can advise you on what measures to take based on the results. You've come to the right place.
I can highly recommend our employee, Milena Moritz, who has a lot of experience in microbiome analysis and gut health coaching. Contact us, give us a call or send us an e-mail at post at arktisbiopharma.ch.
