Gut-brain axis: what is it and how does knowing about it help me? - Interview with Dr. Florian Bilz (DG139)

Gut-brain axis explained simply, that was my idea. But it's not that simple, because there's a lot going on biochemically in the body!
Conditions such as mood swings, concentration problems or panic attacks are often seen as purely psychological or mental problems. But what if the gut was involved in such complaints?
That's what we'll be investigating in today's episode and I'm delighted to have Dr. Florian Bilz from Arktis BioPharma Germany as my guest on this topic!
Florian has a PhD in neuroscience and has always had a soft spot for physiological processes. As a biologist at heart, he is interested in all processes that happen in and around living beings. It is precisely this fascination that he brings to his daily work in product management and scientific consulting at Arktis BioPharma Germany.
Please don't be put off by the complexity of the topic, we have tried to explain it as simply as possible and the core message then crystallizes as a very simple one.

Gut-brain axis explained: these points are included in our interview

I discussed the following points with Florian:

  • What is meant by gut-brain axis
  • What is the interaction between the gut and the brain?
  • Can we positively influence our brain performance or our mood through the targeted use of bacteria?
  • For which complaints should we make use of this knowledge about the existence of this gut-brain connection?
  • What influence do anxiety and stress have on the gut?
  • What remedies and measures are recommended to positively influence the brain and psyche?
  • Is it worthwhile to strengthen the psyche of children through intestinal health?

I was very pleased that Florian also mentioned the importance and usefulness of sport in our conversation and that he agrees with me that you can do a lot with children.

I hope you take away from this episode that even with psychological and mental complaints, where the gut is typically not immediately thought of, a lot is possible if you take care of your gut, your diet and your lifestyle.

Incidentally, Florian has already been a guest of mine here on the podcast in Episode 125 about histaminosis, where he also told us how new products are being developed at Arktis BioPharma, this is a very worthwhile episode!
