DG130: Why I prefer acacia fiber to inulin and what else you need to know about prebiotics

Today's episode is all about prebiotics, and in particular acacia fiber, which we have chosen as our favorite.

What is the difference between probiotics and prebiotics

To begin with, it is important to clarify the difference between probiotics and prebiotics. Probiotics (lactic acid bacteria) are bacteria that have important functions in the intestine for digestion, the production of hormones and immune defense.

Prebiotics are certain dietary fibers that serve as food for the bacteria. These fibers cannot be digested in the small intestine and thus reach the large intestine, where they promote the growth of beneficial bacteria such as bifidobacteria. In addition, they help to reduce potentially harmful types of bacteria and also serve to produce short-chain fatty acids, which in turn are important for your energy and also help to reduce inflammation.

Known prebiotics

On the one hand, a high-fibre diet is helpful. High-quality and prebiotic fiber can be found in onions, garlic, asparagus, leeks, artichokes, chicory, black salsify, cabbage, Jerusalem artichokes, legumes, but also in pectin-containing fruits such as apples, berries and pears. So-called resistant starch in cooled pasta, rice or bananas is also helpful.

There are several different products that have prebiotic effects, such as inulin, psyllium husks, but also acacia fibers. We opted for acacia fiber because it is easy to take, has virtually no taste and does not cause bloating, as other prebiotics tend to do.

Why did we choose acacia fiber?

The fiber provided by acacia fiber is particularly good at stimulating the proliferation of health-promoting bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. A study has shown that acacia fiber does this even better than the prebiotic inulin. In addition, a study by our specialist laboratory, which also carries out microbiome analyses, showed that acacia fibers contributed very well to increasing Faecalibacterium Prausnitzii and Akkermansia muciniphila in the test subjects. And this in turn is important for building up the intestinal mucosa and counteracting inflammation.

Our German colleagues have also produced a video on taking acacia fiber, which demonstrates why acacia fiber is so pleasant to take, in contrast to psyllium husks, forexample:

Intestinal cleansing: ideal combination of probiotics, prebiotics and nutrition

Prebiotics and probiotics are simply part of intestinal cleansing
As already mentioned, prebiotics, i.e. these special dietary fibres, such as those found in acacia fibres, help to increase bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli.
They also help to reduce the pH value in the intestine, which in turn helps you to absorb minerals better and improves digestion overall.

Acacia fibers have proven to be very effective for flatulence, constipation and diarrhea. They work in both directions: in the case of constipation they loosen the stool and in the case of diarrhea they help to absorb excess water and make the stool firmer again.

In any case, it is important that you drink enough water when taking prebiotics.

And what is always part of a bowel cleanse: don't forget your daily diet!

Who should make sure they get enough prebiotics?

In summary, I recommend acacia fiber especially to people who suffer from the following problems:

  • Flatulence
  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • After antibiotic therapy
  • Exposure to harmful bacteria, such as clostridia
  • pH value too high
  • Leaky gut
  • Inflammation of the intestinal mucosa
  • Lactose intolerance
