DG118: The skin as a reflection of the gut - Interview with Nike Tiemann

They say that the skin is the mirror image of the gut. Skin problems are definitely something that many of my clients complain about, so it was a pleasure to be able to interview an expert on the subject of skin.

About Nike Tiemann

Today I'm talking to Nike Tiemann. Nike is a skin and health expert with her own practice in Bremen and coaches people 1:1 online and on site to get their skin problems under control holistically. After suffering from the consequences of an autoimmune disease and chronic intestinal problems for years and having to deal with additional skin and hormone problems after stopping the pill, she quit her job as an export manager and completed 6 years of numerous training and further education courses in the fields of hypnosis, intestines, nutrition, health and skin in order to help herself and her two daughters, who already suffered from neurodermatitis and intolerances in their first years as babies.

Today, Nike is a successful online skin coach and wants to encourage as many people out there as possible to see skin problems as an opportunity. There are solutions, but they are only possible with a holistic approach.

In our conversation, we focused on the connection between gut health and skin health. A little heads up: you may hear background noise from time to time, I think it's caused by Nike's microphone, just don't let it bother you, you can still hear what she's saying perfectly and if you have skin problems or know someone who does, you'll find this interview very useful!

Gut and skin are barrier organs

Gut and skin are both barrier organs that are very well colonized with microbes. If something is not working properly in the gut, this can lead to a leaky gut. This can lead to the absorption of substances that then enter the bloodstream through the intestinal wall and ultimately reach the skin via the liver, where they are excreted.

This is why skin therapy should always focus on the gut.

Why miracle creams don't work

We talk about the dream of the "miracle cream", why it doesn't exist and what you can do first instead of looking for the ideal skincare cream.

Of course, this does not mean that the skin barrier is not affected from the outside, for example by toxins, which are also contained in so-called skin care products.

Holistic approach

We also talk about the search for the causes of skin problems, and that it always involves the gut and nutrition. For Nike, nutrition is the medicine of the century, and it always will be, she says. Unfortunately, nutrition is still underestimated, and I can underline that from my own experience!

Of course, she also talks about the skin, finds out what the genetic skin type is, whether the skin barrier is damaged, what the acid mantle is like and much more.

And even things like teeth, liver, Epstein Barr virus or stress are looked at, so it's a very holistic approach!

Stress in particular has a huge impact on the gut and Nike explains very clearly in the interview how stress and skin are connected. And also what good sleep has to do with the skin.

Finally, we talk a bit about the time horizon, how long it takes for the skin to improve.
