The topic of cyclical living shows us how we can live a little better in harmony with nature again and how we can plan different activities depending on the phase we are in.

Dear Josianne, you are originally a bookseller, how did you come across the topic of the menstrual cycle and cyclical living?

Josianne: Yes, it all started with books. During my bookselling apprenticeship, I became aware of this topic, which fascinated me even then, but I didn't pursue it any further. However, a few years ago, I integrated the topic into my life and it has now become an integral part of my private and professional life.

When we talk about the menstrual cycle, does this topic only affect women or is it also of interest to men?

Josianne: Humans are cyclical in nature, so cyclical life forms are the basis of our lives.

There are normal life cycles such as day and night or ebb and flow, as well as the change of the four seasons. We women also have the special bonus of the menstrual cycle. What men and women have in common are the bursts of creativity and the rest periods, or the work assignments where we are full of energy and the corresponding moments of retreat.

After all, every man is surrounded by women. It's surprising how few people think about the menstrual cycle and what effect it has on the psyche and our well-being. Once you've got to know your cycle, you're a lot closer to yourself and you get to know it in a way that makes life much easier.

Many people find the female cycle tedious and annoying, how do you see it?

Josianne: I think the menstrual cycle is the greatest gift we women receive in life, because the whole of humanity depends on it. I meet women every day who hate their cycle, suffer from pain and want to suppress this pain with medication.

Everyone goes through around 450 cycles. If these processes are perceived as disturbing, you don't feel good about a large part of yourself.

A menstrual cycle lasts approximately 28 days in total. There are short cycles and long cycles, it starts with menstruation, then 14 days later comes ovulation and another 14 days later comes menstruation.

Many people think that there is only this quarter of menstruation, but there are 3 more quarters that make the cycle round.

Would you like to describe the 4 quarters and what distinguishes these quarters from each other?

Josianne: Yes, menstruation is like an inner winter. Here we can imagine a tree and the flowers that are asleep.

Then comes spring where the first leaves appear, the buds blossom and everything comes back to life, which is how most women feel after their menstruation, they are a little more outwardly oriented again.

This is followed by the inner summer - the ovulation period, when we women are in full bloom, when we are bursting with energy and want to get involved in every project, etc.

This is followed by the inner fall, which is the biggest construction site for most women. The inner fall is known as "PMS", the premenstrual syndrome.

This is a time of letting go and saying goodbye, it is the phase before menstruation, in which we often have a very thin thread of patience and self-doubt often comes to the surface. During this phase, everything that we don't like and that needs to be optimized comes to the surface.

The last phase is menstruation, when we can let go and everything starts all over again.

In summary, we can say that the inner spring is the time of the young girl.

The inner summer - the ovulation phase - is the time of the warrior and the mother, the woman who is in the middle of life and coming into her power.

The inner autumn is the phase of life of the wild woman, who is sometimes unruly and uncomfortable, and finally the wise woman, the grandmother, appears during menstruation in the inner winter.

We all experience these 4 quarters in one month, in one cycle. Please note that all you need for a cyclical life is yourself and your power of observation, be fully present with yourself, reflect and observe yourself.

That sounds very exciting, do you recommend a calendar in which the information on the individual phases should be noted down?

Josianne: Yes, I have a cycle wheel on my website that you can download. This cycle wheel serves as an observation tool to see which cycle day I am in today. I recommend using it for a few months because it's the way to a self-determined life.

It's great to know which phase you're currently in, what's good for you in this phase and what's not, and to get an outlook for the next two weeks. This allows me to adapt my professional and private life perfectly to these phases.

Have you noticed a positive change in terms of stress management, more energy, etc. since you started living cyclically?

Josianne: Yes, definitely. When asked how I manage all this, I like to answer: "By living cyclically". I work less than I used to, but I get more done because I know exactly when to do what.

Let's take bookkeeping as an example: in the inner spring and summer, I don't care about bookkeeping and paying bills. In the inner fall, I focus on the invoices and any reminders, and in the winter during menstruation, nobody needs to ask me about bookkeeping.

Do you also act accordingly when it comes to appointments?

Josianne: Yes, I've started doing that. It There are times when I realize that it's better to meet up a week later. You can always do something good for yourself, even if you're menstruating. The topic of self-care is very important here: if you're not feeling well, you can go outside for some fresh air during your lunch break instead of going to the canteen with your colleagues. Or that you take time for yourself after work and see what is good for you.

Cyclical living has a lot to do with personal responsibility. There are people who often complain because they feel inferior to the cycle, so you should look at how capable I am of recognizing my needs instead of putting them in the background.

Cyclical living integrates your own needs very well without anyone having to suffer as a result. It is not a burden for others, but rather a relief, for example in relation to my husband, he knows exactly that I need my rest during my menstrual phase.

What do you recommend for symptoms such as bloating, pain and cramps?

Josianne: A pain-free menstruation is a desire, a need that can realistically be fulfilled and satisfied. I would look at two sides here: On the one hand, I recommend finding out what menstruation means for yourself, i.e. where am I tainted with a taboo story in terms of disgust, shame and pain. So take a look at your own menstrual history.

Secondly, it is important to know your own needs well, e.g. if you want to withdraw, you should fulfill this desire and thus take personal responsibility.

The third thing is the support of a good naturopath or a good nutritionist.

So it is an interplay of inner work, nutrition and, of course, intestinal health?

Josianne: Yes, exactly, there is a close connection here. If you notice that you don't feel like cooking every month just before your period and your desire for chocolate or a frozen pizza increases, it's good that this information comes to light. Because based on this information, you should get to the bottom of the matter and seek advice.

Just before and during menstruation, it is important to eat warm food and avoid cabbage, leeks, onions and garlic, for example.

Are you even writing a book on this topic?

Josianne: Yes, it's not quite finished yet and is currently in print. It will be published at the end of this year, early next year. You can get more detailed information by subscribing to my newsletter.

I have received so much feedback from my online course that many women would have liked to have had this knowledge a few years earlier, which motivates me a lot to share my own knowledge.

What do the phases of the moon have to do with the cycles, especially in relation to the menopause?

Josianne: In the past, when there was no artificial light, women menstruated with the new moon and ovulated at full moon.

Today, if a woman is informed about a cyclical life, she should also deal with her own menstrual history during the menopause, e.g. write a letter to herself and consciously say goodbye to the last menses.

I recommend that both women and men inform themselves about the current phase of the moon, because exciting things happen during these phases.

Menstruation is a time of rest and you should take care of yourself during this time. make sure you get some rest. For me, a cyclical life is the best way to prevent burnout.

You also mentioned that you have your own online course on the topic of "living cyclically"?

Josianne: Yes, I give online courses twice a year. The next course starts in February 2020, and you can find all the important information in my newsletter.

Finally, would you like to say a few words about cyclical living?

Josianne: Get to know your cyclical nature. Ask yourself the following questions every day: "What day of my cycle am I on today, what is good for me and what should I avoid?" These questions are so effective, it's really worth observing yourself over a few weeks.
