DG019: How to keep your gut feeling during the holidays

[g_podcast id="7936760"]

Darmglück Podcast, episode 19. In this episode I talk about:
  • What Christmas is really all about
  • Why your health is much more important than any Christmas cookie in the world
  • Why you need a why
  • What you can look out for in your diet during the holidays to keep your gut healthy
  • What other tips I have in store for you for the holidays
  • And: the best way to continue after Christmas

Are you a bit scared of the holidays, and especially of feeling sluggish and overeating afterwards? Basically, if you eat healthily all year round, the Christmas holidays shouldn't be a big problem for your metabolism. After all, it's only a few days.

But if you've been struggling with your diet the whole pre-Christmas and Advent period, then the holidays with their invitations, festive meals, cookies and alcohol can be the famous straw that breaks the camel's back.

That's why I wanted to go into a little more detail in this episode on how you can minimize the damage, so to speak. I hope you can take something away with you!

It might be helpful for you to first remind yourself what the original idea of Christmas is

  • Festival of love, of giving, festival of light
  • Good triumphs over evil
  • A welcome break to reflect on the year that is coming to an end and to think about what you would like to achieve in the new year

In my opinion, we attach too much importance to food! What's really important is being together with loved ones, being grateful for what we have, celebrating the creation of new things, reflection and contemplation. If you're anything like me, it's values such as love, abundance, authenticity and self-expression that really count. If we are really honest, then we want one thing above all: to be happy. And we should be!

Why is your health important to you

  • I don't want to be a moralizer and of course there's nothing wrong with eating a few Christmas cookies every now and then
  • But what's more important than any food is that you feel good. To have strength and energy. And that you can live your life the way you want to and perhaps the way your destiny had planned for you
  • And if you remember how you feel when you are in pain, when you feel unbalanced or even angry or sad, or when your stomach hurts or your skin itches... then you know that you can't perform at your best at such times, or perhaps even have to cancel things that you would have liked to do. And that's the real reason why poor health negatively affects your life - because it becomes a brake that stops you from doing things you actually want to do. Or prevents you from succeeding.

If you've already completed my online course Gut Happiness, then you know the exercise of why. It's about finding your real, true why, why you want to be healthy. Maybe because you want a new job. Or because you want to run your business successfully. Because you want to travel, have energy for your family or, or, or, or.

Just sit down in a quiet minute and ask your heart for your why. Your deep why. And maybe the first answer is not yet the final one. Then just ask yourself "why" again. And again. Until you get to the bottom of it are.

If you have found this deep why, then you know that healthy eating is not a sacrifice, not a sacrifice, but a gain. Because nothing can replace quality of life. Not even with good food. And if you'd like help finding this why, then take a closer look at our online course Gut Happiness.

Today, however, I'm going to start with a few very simple nutritional rules so that you don't suffer from stomach ache, bloating, flatulence or pain during the holidays. So here are my best tips for a few carefree days:
  1. If possible, only eat home-cooked and baked things without ready-made products, additives and other industrial junk
  2. If you bake or make desserts, use significantly less sugar than in the recipe and don't eat too many sweets. 1 handful a day is usually enough to satisfy sweet cravings.
  3. Start the day with a good breakfast, preferably without sugar. For example, scrambled eggs with zucchinis, vegetable soup with some chicken breast, chia muesli with berries and so on.
  4. Only eat things that you can tolerate. If you are honest, you usually know what is not so good for you, so I would leave that out too.
  5. Drink enough water and avoid sweet drinks completely
  6. If you drink alcohol, it's best to only drink it with food and if possible, drink good quality alcohol
  7. Eat only 2-3 times a day
  8. Enjoy your food and eat mindfully, then you will also notice when you have had enough
  9. If you already know that certain things are not good for you, such as wheat or dairy products, then ask the host or hostess in advance what you will be having and offer to bring something yourself.

My other tips

  • Plan outdoor activities that are fun for everyone (ice skating, a day in the mountains, a visit to the zoo, a scavenger hunt in the forest, a trip to a tourist attraction in your area).
  • If you are alone or can't get out, do something that makes you lose track of time (origami, painting, knitting, building an electric train, puzzles)
  • Use the days to get back in touch with yourself a little. Think about what went well in 2018 and what you want to bring into your life in 2019. Think about your why, as I described at the beginning of the episode.

What to do after Christmas

Of course, it doesn't make much sense to change your diet before the holidays. Unless you're in really bad health, then it always makes sense immediately.

But if what I've said about the importance of health has motivated you so much that you want to do something for yourself and your body after the holidays, then I can already tell you that I have a lot planned for December and January.

If you've subscribed to our newsletter, then you'll definitely receive an invitation to my next webinar, which will be about the 5 things you can do for a healthy gut. I'm also planning to make more videos again to give you tips that you can implement immediately. If you haven't already listened to my podcast episodes number 1, 2 and 3, I recommend you listen to them after Christmas, where I tell you a lot about how you can best organize your diet. And if you'd like me to accompany you in January, I recommend you join the next round of the Darmglück online course so that you can feel fit, light and full of energy again as quickly as possible.

I've decided for myself that I'm going to make 2019 all about self-care. will. I haven't done much for myself and my own health in the last few months because I've simply been very busy with business development, events and a few personal things. I'll definitely be reporting on exactly what I'm going to do for myself in the podcast, on Facebook and Instagram, so I'd be delighted if you'd join me there.

If you'd like to read a bit more about this topic of nutrition during the Christmas season, my article "How to keep a good gut feeling despite Christmas feasting" is published today in the Lowcarb-LCHF magazine from LCHF Germany.

And while I'm on the subject of LCHF (which stands for Low Carb High Fat, by the way), I've had the pleasure of giving a talk at the LCHF Congress in Düsseldorf for the last two years.

I can also tell you why I think the congress is so great. Firstly, there are always first-class speakers there, such as Ulrike Gonder, Dr. Sabine Paul, Prof. Dr. Jörg Spitz or Doc Fleck, who you may know from the TV show Die Ernährungsdocs. Secondly, there is always a super positive atmosphere there and you can exchange ideas with like-minded people. And thirdly, I know of hardly any other conference where you can get in touch with the experts and speakers as easily as at the LCHF Congress. Roman and I will be there on both days and if you are there too, then definitely come and say hello to us, we look forward to seeing you!

In any case, I wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas, or at least a Merry Christmas Eve, because if you like, we'll see you on Christmas Day for the next episode of the Darmglück podcast! If you haven't already done so, simply subscribe to the podcast on Apple Podcast, Stitcher, or the podcast app of your choice, and you will automatically receive the new episodes on your smartphone.

Now I recommend you subscribe to the podcast so that you don't miss an episode, and if you like what you hear, I would really appreciate a rating on iTunes or Apple Podcast. Because these reviews also help other people to find the podcast so that we can spread the knowledge about gut and health more.
