DG016: Why natural cosmetics are a good idea and what else you can do for your skin - Interview with Schareska Antequera

[g_podcast id="7675964"]

This time I interviewed the founder of the natural cosmetics brand amo como soy, Schareska Antequera.

Among other things, we talk about:
  • Why Schareska founded her own cosmetics label
  • What amo como soy means and what's behind the name
  • Why she combines facial care with mindfulness
  • How conventional cosmetics, natural cosmetics and certified natural cosmetics differ
  • And: why simply using good skincare products is not enough for the skin

I was delighted to conduct an interview with beautician and life coach Schareska Antequera. Schareska is the founder of the natural cosmetics brand amo como soy. Born in Venezuela, she has years of experience in the cosmetics sector and what makes her concept special is that she combines facial care with coaching topics and places particular emphasis on mindfulness.

I met Schareska at an event in Zurich some time ago and I was already impressed by how enthusiastic she is about what she does.

I don't know about you, but the more I concern myself with my health and well-being, the less I feel like putting any artificial substances on my body. And I think it's important that you know that everything we put on our skin also goes into our bodies. It doesn't just stay on our skin!

You may also have heard me say that the skin is a reflection of the gut. So the topic of skin is definitely important in the Darmglück podcast.

What does amo como soy mean?

Amo como soy is Spanish and means: I love myself the way I am.

Schareska founded the label three years ago and sees it more as a whole beauty concept than "just" a natural cosmetics brand.

She worked for many years in large and medium-sized companies in the cosmetics industry. But the work there was too superficial for her. She realized,
that most women are not satisfied with themselves and chase after an ideal of beauty. She says: "We look far too little at what is inside us and how beautiful we are by nature."

As her mother has a cosmetics company in Venezuela, she grew up with it. She has always been very interested in topics such as psychology and people's inner selves, which is why she trained as a life coach. She then combined these two things with amo como soy. She wants to show people the connection between what we are on the inside and the beauty we have on the outside.

What is the difference between conventional cosmetics, natural cosmetics and certified natural cosmetics?

Conventional cosmetics are the ones we are used to and mainly contain chemical products.

Natural cosmetics contain some natural oils, but also chemical ingredients.

Then there are natural cosmetics that are certified and those that are not. Certified products are checked to see where the ingredients come from and whether certain standards are met, such as that they contain no PEGs, no petroleum derivatives and no synthetic fragrances.

The three largest and best-known seals are: BDIH, EcoCert and NaTrue.

Schareska wants to give its customers the They want to be sure that they can use their products with a clear conscience, which is why she has had them certified. All her products are also vegan. Note: Not all natural cosmetic products are completely vegan.

Fragrances are also a big issue. It is much better for the skin to apply natural fragrances rather than synthetic ones. This is also a matter of getting used to, at some point you find the synthetic substances too strong and no longer tolerate them well. The products from amo como soy contain natural fragrances. However, if you have severe skin problems, you should also try them out to see if you can tolerate them.

Schareska offers trial samples of all products that last for about two weeks. The same applies here as with nutrition: not everything is the same for everyone, you have to test it.

How important is a healthy diet for the skin?

A change in diet detoxifies the skin, so it is important to let it breathe. Creams that contain petroleum derivatives, for example, prevent this because they leave a film on the skin.

Hydration is also very important. Schareska's products moisturize the skin, but that alone is not enough. It is important to drink water and support the skin from the inside. Basically, nutrition is always reflected in the skin. That is why an anti-inflammatory diet with lots of vegetables, good proteins, good fats etc. is recommended. Many people also react to dairy products, for example, because they do not tolerate them well.

Do natural cosmetics not last as long as conventional cosmetics?

Yes, indeed. Schareska's products have a shelf life of 6 months after opening. That's because it's natural and the ingredients work. Sometimes, for example, the fragrance changes slightly after opening.

How are inner attitude and mindfulness related to the skin?

A very simple example: If we are stressed, we get stress spots. When we're feeling good, our skin is rosy.

At amo como soy, the big theme is: do what's good for you!

Nowadays, we just run from A to B all day long. As a result, women often lose touch with themselves and no longer know what is really good for them. The answer is not just reading a book and having a coffee with a friend. It takes a little more and you have to take a closer look. For example, what did you like to do in your childhood? Do you still do that regularly today?

Amo como soy therefore works a lot with positive feelings and self-acceptance. For example, it offers an online meditation that you can listen to while wearing a mask. The cream jars have reflection questions in the lids, there are affirmation cards, mindfulness exercises, etc.

As I said, the message is to combine inner beauty with outer beauty. Despite all the stress, 95% of women take one minute in the morning and one minute in the evening to apply cream. If we are mindful of this action, feel our way in when applying cream and consciously look at ourselves in the mirror, then we get a lot more in touch with ourselves.

In December, amo como soy has its birthday and turns 3 years old. That's why Schareska has planned some activities: From 03.12. live interviews on Facebook, e.g. with Julia, with a coach who works with "the Work" method, with a beautician who gives tips for skin in winter, etc. There are also lots of great offers in the store. In November, all the samples are available at even lower prices.

So that was our interview, I hope it has motivated you to get involved with skincare and cosmetics. Feel free to write to me in the comments if you already use natural cosmetics and what your favorite products are. Because it doesn't just make sense for cleansing and skin care, but also for products like lipstick or sun cream!,

I'm also meeting with a natural cosmetician at the weekend to get some advice on this, so maybe I'll report on this experience then too.

You'll also find the link to amo como soy's Facebook page below and I'm sure that the activities that Schareska will be publishing there for their 3rd anniversary will bring a lot of added value. Schareska also interviewed me about the connection between gut and skin, so keep your eyes peeled if you're interested in this topic.

I've just finished the latest round of my Darmglück course and some of the participants have told me that their skin has improved immensely in the 6 weeks of the course.
