Breathing techniques for coping with stress: A conversation between Julia and Roman Gruber (DG282)

Breathing and regeneration: Roman Gruber on the art of breathing correctly

Breathing - an important and totally underestimated topic in our opinion. That's why we'll be producing a 4-part mini-series on the subject in the coming weeks. You will learn, for example, that breathing is directly linked to the autonomic nervous system. But also that breathing can influence things like the immune system and gut, why nasal breathing is so important and much more.

This episode kicks off the mini-series. My husband Roman gives an introduction to the topic and explains why we have expanded our range to include things like IHHT and FaceFormer therapy.

The initiative for this topic came from Roman, who is currently undergoing further training with Rolf Duda from Peakwolf on the subject of Breathwork. Rolf will be my interview guest in part 3 of the mini-series.

Roman is co-founder and CEO of Arktis BioPharma Switzerland. Together we had a practice in Basel for over 10 years, where everything revolved around analytics, gut health, orthomolecular therapy and nutritional coaching. Roman is the one of us who is very deep into biochemistry and who also knows a lot about the body and the topic of performance, performance enhancement and regeneration due to his background in professional and competitive sports.

Highlights of this episode

Why does Roman consider breathing to be so important?

How Roman's background in martial arts, the military and time as a triathlete highlighted the topic of breathing as a central component of performance and concentration from an early age

What a good breathing rate would be

How you can test how well you are breathing

Hopefully you enjoyed the interview and are curious about the following episodes on the topic. In the next episode, I will have Dr. Egor Egorov as a guest. Dr. Egorov is an expert and author of several books on the subject of interval hypoxia.

In part 3, I'll be talking to Rolf Duda, who offers breathwork and runs training courses in this field. And in the last part of the series, I will talk to Dr. Klaus Berndsen about FaceFormer therapy. He will explain to us why nasal breathing is important, but why correct swallowing and head posture are also essential.

Roman mentioned the so-called BOLT test (Body Oxygen Level Test) in the interview. You can find instructions on how to carry it out at this link:

Here are the most important steps of the BOLT test

:
  • No food intake or sporting activity 2 hours beforehand
  • Test best in the morning after getting up
  • Sit for 5 minutes and breathe calmly
  • Breathe out in a relaxed manner
  • Hold your breath at the end of the exhalation and start the stopwatch
  • Stop the stopwatch with the first pulse of the respiratory drive
  • Record the time
IMPORTANT: The aim is not to measure how long you can hold your breath after the relaxed exhalation, but only until the impulse to breathe occurs.
